Our History at a Glance
For nearly four decades, CBDCE has set the standard for professional excellence in diabetes care and education. From administering its first certification examination in 1986 to overseeing nationally recognized credentials today, CBDCE has remained committed to advancing professional practice and improving outcomes for people at risk for or living with diabetes.
1986
A Profession Takes Shape
The National Certification Board for Diabetes Educators (NCBDE) is established to create a national standard for recognizing specialized expertise in diabetes education. In October 1986, 1,248 healthcare professionals successfully complete the first certification examination, establishing the foundation for a growing specialty.
1990s–2000s
Growing and Expanding Access
With certification increasingly recognized as a mark of excellence, NCBDE establishes its administrative independence in 1995, strengthening its foundation for future growth. The organization continues to evolve alongside the profession, introducing computer-based testing in 2009 to expand accessibility while upholding rigorous credentialing standards.
2010s
Advancing Accessibility and Quality
CBDCE expands opportunities for professionals through computer-based testing, scholarship and mentorship programs, and continued commitment to maintaining rigorous certification standards.
2020
From CDE® to CDCES®
The Certified Diabetes Educator®(CDE®) credential transitions to Certified Diabetes Care and Education Specialist® (CDCES®), reflecting the expanded role of professionals who provide diabetes care, education, prevention, and support.
2024
Launching the Ambassador Program
CBDCE introduces the Ambassador Program, empowering certificants to serve as advocates, leaders, and champions for the diabetes care and education profession.
2025
Expanding Leadership in Diabetes Credentialing
CBDCE assumes responsibility for the Board Certified–Advanced Diabetes Management (BC-ADM®) credential, bringing two leading diabetes credentials under one organization and strengthening the pathway for professional excellence.
